Winner Prix de Rome Painting 1884: J. van Looy
The painter/draftsman/writer Jacobus van Looy (1855-1930) won the Prix de Rome in 1884 in the category Painting. He was assigned to share the price with Jan Dunselman, who was awarded the first price as well. This, because the jury was not able to appoint one winner. After discontinuation of the Prix de Rome in 1851, the price was reinstated in honour in 1870. However, a new competition was not written out until 1884 by August Allebé, former director of the Rijks-Akademie.
