Falke Pisano to Rome

On the 15th of September Falke Pisano commenced her work period at the American Academy in Rome. Pisano won the Prix de Rome Visual Arts in November 2013 with her installation Prison Work.

The winner of the Prix de Rome is presented with a EUR 40,000 cash prize and a work period at the American Academy in Rome. Through the latter, the Mondriaan Fund gives a contemporary spin on the award’s origins. In the 19th century the winner of the prize received a gold medal and a bursary of 2000 guilders for a study trip in which he was required to follow a strictly defined programme of cities and masterpieces to be studied. These trips, only incidentally, reached beyond the borders of Italy. Contemporary winners will travel to Rome to work on new plans and projects. Falke Pisano started a research project in Rome, in which she investigates how the colonial history of Holland and Portugal come together in the Roman depictions on tiles in a Brazilian church.
